About the Artist

Elijah Albert COX (1876-1955)

Painter, poster and mural artist and book illustrator, born in London.

He studied at the People’s Palace Technical School, Whitechapel, then at Bolt Court School. Worked as a designer in industry, which later proved useful in his public poster and mural work. He also learned much from assisting the eminent artist, Sir Frank Brangwyn.

Cox was a regular exhibitor at RA, RI, SGA, Whitechapel Art Gallery and elsewhere. Illustrated several books. Public galleries, including Preston, Bristol and Canterbury, hold his work. Lived at Woolage Green, near Canterbury, Kent.
